OTREC Limon Educational Outreach Success!

Our tenacious team enjoyed an uplifting success when we visited the local public school in Cahuita! We were delighted to have the opportunity to interact with a class of 8 year olds and share our enthusiasm over weather science with them. After learning the names of all of the children and chatting with them for a while, our team gave a brief explanation of what we are doing here, and conducted a show-and-tell of our radiosonde equipment and balloons (los globos giganticos!).

The children were wonderful listeners and the teachers were amazing and helpful! Next, we asked the children to think about their favorite weather and color a picture of it. Many of them drew rainbows (los arcos iris) and homes (in Cahuita the cool people call them chales), themselves and their families. Several also drew lightning storms with big dark clouds and lots of rain!

We had a lovely time coloring with the children, teaching them about clouds, and learning some new Spanish words from them. After our coloring activity, we all went outside for a drone demonstration. We took aerial photos of the children waving at the drone, and they were all eager to see how the drone was controlled and touch it when it landed.

I think this was the most exciting part for them! Lastly, we shared some 3D glasses with hurricane pictures for the children to look at, but they were happy to simply look at the things around them through the nifty blue and red lenses!

We wrapped up our goodbyes with a touching moment of spontaneous hugs from many of the children. This experience was easily the best part of our campaign!

The outreach was held at Excellencia Cahuita on Monday, 9th of September, 2019. The participants were Yolande Serra, Beata Latos, Sarah Tannenbaum, and Natalia Mora. Special thanks to Annie Duran for setting it up for us!
